What Happened
The water pump in your vehicle is a crucial part that helps keep your engine cool. In some models, the electrical connector on this pump might not be sealed properly, making it vulnerable to water damage.
Risk if Unfixed
If water seeps into the pump, it could cause an electrical short circuit, which could lead to a fire in your engine compartment.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and replace the water pump and its electrical connector if needed, and add a protective shield to prevent future problems. This repair is complimentary, and you should schedule it as soon as you receive the recall notice.

An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

What Happened
Your vehicle's side airbag system has a small component called the seat-mounted air bag inflator initiator. This part is responsible for igniting the airbag in a crash, but in some 2016-2017 BMW models, it might not work as planned.
Risk if Unfixed
If the airbag inflator fails to ignite, the side airbag won't deploy in a crash. This could leave you without protection, increasing the risk of serious injury.
Free Fix

What Happened
The Emergency Locking Retractor in your vehicle's front seat belt is a mechanism that helps keep you safe in a crash. In some 2016-2017 models, this mechanism might not lock properly when you're sitting forward in the driver's seat.
Risk if Unfixed
If you're in a crash with hard braking, the seat belt might lock too soon, which could increase the risk of injury to the driver. This could happen because the belt might be too tight, restricting your movement.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the driver's seat belt assembly with a new one that works correctly, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, MINI Hardtop 4 Door Cooper, Mini Hardtop 4 Door Cooper S, MINI Cooper Clubman, and Cooper S Clubman, 2017 Rolls-Royce Ghost, and 2016 528i vehicles. The vehicle-sensitive locking mechanism of the seat belt Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) for the driver's seat may not lock as designed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

The inboard lower anchor for child seats on the left rear seat of your BMW has a small problem - it might be bent downwards, making it harder for your child seat to attach securely.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 535d xDrive, M5, 550i, 550i xDrive, and 535d sedans. The affected vehicles have an inboard lower anchor for child restraints on the left rear seat that may have been bent downwards, preventing the child seat from fully engaging both lower anchors. As such, these vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems."
