What Happened
Your 3 Series' driver airbag is the part that deploys in front of you in case of a crash. In some older models, the airbag's inflator, which is attached to the steering wheel, might be faulty.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes during a crash, it could shoot sharp metal fragments into you or your passengers, causing serious injury or even death. This is a life-threatening situation.
Free Fix
Your authorized BMW dealer will inspect and replace the airbag module for free. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice. The repair is free, and you can reach BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

What Happened
The airbag in your car is designed to protect you in a crash, but in some 2006-2014 BMW models, the airbag inflator could fail and explode, sending sharp metal fragments into the passenger compartment.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, you could be seriously injured or even killed by the flying metal fragments. This is a very real and serious risk.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag inflator with a new one, free of charge. This is a completely free repair, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

The wiring and electrical connectors in your vehicle control the air flow for the heating and air conditioning system. In certain 2006-2011 BMW models, these components can overheat and fail.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring overheats, it could melt the electrical connectors, causing a fire even when your vehicle is parked and unattended. This is a serious risk that could cause significant damage or injury.

Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty wiring and electrical connectors at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible when you receive the recall notice.

The positive battery cable in your vehicle is the part that connects the battery to the fuse box. Over time, this connection can wear out and break, causing your car to lose power.
Risk if Unfixed
If the connection breaks, your vehicle could stall while driving, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the battery cable connector with a new one and secure it properly, all at no cost to you. Just wait for the recall notice and schedule the repair.

Original — What Happened
BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through September 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. In February 2013, BMW recalled 504,545 vehicles. In July 2013, BMW informed the agency that it was adding 1-Series, 3-Series, and Z4 vehicles, representing an additional 12,094 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 516,791. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle.

If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
