The EGR cooler in your diesel engine is a small part that helps clean exhaust gases. In some 2013-2017 BMW models, this cooler can leak, allowing soot and coolant to mix and create a fire hazard.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler leaks, it could cause a fire in your engine, which could damage your vehicle and put you at risk of serious injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty EGR cooler and check your intake manifold for damage. If it's damaged, they'll replace it too – all for free.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The EGR valve in your vehicle is a crucial part that helps reduce emissions and pollution. It's located in the exhaust system and works with your engine to keep it running smoothly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler inside the EGR valve starts leaking, it can mix with soot from your diesel engine. This can cause a fire hazard when hot EGR gases come into contact with the soot, potentially melting the intake manifold and increasing the risk of a fire.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and replace the EGR cooler if it's leaking. If a leak has already occurred, they'll also replace the intake manifold to ensure your safety. These repairs are completely free of charge – you should schedule an appointment as soon as you receive the recall notice.
