Component

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL

Manufacturer
VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
What Happened
Your vehicle's fuel system is made up of many parts that work together. One of these parts is a fuel injector line, which is like a thin tube that carries fuel to your engine. In certain 2009-2012 models, this line can develop small cracks under the right conditions.
Risk if Unfixed
If the fuel line cracks, it could leak fuel. If that fuel gets near an ignition source, like a spark, it could catch fire. This could lead to a serious fire under the hood of your car.
Free Fix
Your authorized Volkswagen or Audi dealer will replace the faulty fuel injector line with a new one that's less likely to crack, and they'll also add special vibration dampers to all the fuel lines to reduce stress. The repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL 2009-2012 JETTA AND JETTA SPORTWAGEN VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2008 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, AND MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 AUDI A3 VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, THAT ARE EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L TDI COMMON RAIL DIESEL ENGINE/CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE. THE FUEL INJECTION PULSES COULD COINCIDE WITH THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE INJECTOR LINE #2, IN SPECIFIC LOAD AND RPM CONDITIONS. THIS RESONANCE CREATES ADDITIONAL STRESS IN THE FUEL LINE.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
DUE TO THE RESONANCE CONDITION, INJECTOR LINE NUMBER 2 COULD DEVELOP SMALL CRACKS WHICH COULD LEAD TO FUEL LEAKAGE. LEAKING FUEL IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, MAY LEAD TO A FIRE.
Original — Remedy
VOLKSWAGEN WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED FUEL INJECTOR LINE FOR THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER ON CERTAIN VEHICLES AND WILL INSTALL VIBRATION DAMPERS ON ALL OF THE INJECTOR LINES. VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO HAVE THE VEHICLES REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

What Happened
The fuel tank in your Audi is a container that holds gasoline. In some 2006-2010 A3, TT, and TT Roadster models, a small valve inside the tank might not close tightly when driving in extreme conditions, allowing fuel to leak.
Risk if Unfixed
If fuel leaks out and meets an ignition source, your vehicle could catch on fire.
Free Fix
Your Audi dealer will replace the faulty fuel tank ventilation valve with a new one that closes tightly, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible to prevent a potential fire risk.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Manufacturer
VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
What Happened
The transmission control module in your car is like the brain of the transmission, making sure the gears shift smoothly. In your 2009 or 2010 VW, a faulty wiring harness could trick the transmission into thinking the oil is too hot.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your transmission could suddenly shift into neutral while you're driving, without warning. This could cause you to lose control of your car and increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your Volkswagen dealer will update the transmission control module with new software, free of charge. You should schedule this update as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

Original — What Happened
VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2008 AND AUGUST 2009. THE WIRING HARNESS OF A TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE DIRECT SHIFT GEARBOX (DSG) MAY HAVE CONNECTOR WIRES THAT WERE INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED. WITH INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED CONNECTOR WIRES, A TEMPERATURE SENSOR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FALSELY DETECT A HIGH GEARBOX OIL TEMPERATURE, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO ABRUPTLY SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE SELECTOR LEVER POSITION INDICATOR WITHIN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WILL FLASH. IN ADDITION, THE "DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL" INDICATOR LIGHT WILL BE ILLUMINATED, ALERTING THE DRIVER TO APPLY THE BRAKES.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
THE ABRUPT SHIFT TO NEUTRAL COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
Original — Remedy
VOLKSWAGEN WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 20, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.
