STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
What Happened
The steering torque sensor in your vehicle is a critical component that helps the power steering system detect the direction you're steering. In some 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner models, this sensor might not work properly, which could disable the power steering assist.
Risk if Unfixed
If power steering assist is lost, you'll need to use more effort to steer the vehicle at low speeds, which could make it harder to control the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your Ford dealer will update the software for the power steering system, which includes the steering control module and the instrument cluster, at no cost to you. They'll also replace any faulty components if they're found during the repair. The repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.
