What Happened
The electric power steering assist system in your 2011 1-Series Active E or 2012 Z4 is a computer-controlled system that helps you steer your vehicle. It's what makes steering easier when you're driving.
Risk if Unfixed
If the system fails, you could suddenly find it much harder to turn your wheels, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the steering assist module with a new one at no cost to you. You'll get a recall notice, and you should schedule the repair as soon as possible to keep your vehicle safe and reliable.

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 1-SERIES ACTIVE E AND MODEL YEAR 2012 Z4 VEHICLES. VARIATIONS IN ELECTRICAL CURRENT MAY OCCUR WITHIN THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM, LEADING TO SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE.

SUDDEN LOSS OF STEERING ASSISTANCE MAY INCREASE THE STEERING EFFORT REQUIRED TO CONTROL THE DIRECTION OF A VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
