Component

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
Your vehicle is being recalled because a faulty system could shift the transmission to Neutral instead of Park when you turn off the engine, which could cause your car to roll away.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your car could roll away and crash, potentially hurting people nearby or causing damage.
Free Fix
BMW will fix this issue for free. You'll be contacted in November 2012, and the fix will be available starting in March 2013. You can also reach out to BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com to get more information.

Original — What Happened
BMW is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 7-Series vehicles, equipped with the Comfort Access option, and manufactured August 23, 2004, through July 24, 2008. The affected vehicles have an electronic key and an electronic connection between the gear shifter and the transmission (shift-by-wire) that automatically shifts the transmission to Park when the driver presses the Start/Stop button to shutdown the engine. If the driver presses the engine Start/Stop button 2 or 3 times within a short time interval, the system may shift the transmission to Neutral rather than Park. If using the electronic key (Comfort Access mode), there would be no protection from the ignition interlock that prevents key removal if the vehicle is not in Park.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
If the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in Neutral and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may rollaway. Unattended rollaway incidents often result in a crash or cause injury to pedestrians attempting to stop or enter the vehicle or to other bystanders in the path of the vehicle.
Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners beginning in November 2012. The remedy became available in March 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The occupant classification system in your vehicle helps determine if the passenger airbag should deploy in a crash. It's made up of a mat that senses if someone is in the passenger seat. In some older BMW models, this mat could crack and fail over time.
Risk if Unfixed
If the mat fails, the passenger airbag won't deploy in a crash, which could lead to serious injury to the passenger in the front seat.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will repair or replace the occupant detection mat to prevent it from cracking, free of charge. They'll also give you an extended warranty on the mat. You'll receive a notification when the repair is available, and you should schedule it as soon as you can.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2006 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi sedans and 325xi sports wagons, model year 2007 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi sedans and 328i and 328xi sports wagons, model year 2006-2007 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 550i sedans and 530xi sports wagons, model year 2006 760i sedans, model year 2006-2007 750i, 750Li, and 760Li sedans, and model year 2006 X5 sports activity vehicles, equipped with certain seat types. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if and how the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.
Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners with an interim notification letter in January 2014 since parts are not currently available. When parts are available, BMW sent a second letter in August and dealers will repair the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack, free of charge. Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 Series with standard seats, 5 Series with comfort seats, and Z4 models, will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The latches on your doors control how they close and stay shut. In some 2005-2008 BMW models, these latches might not work properly, making it seem like your doors are closed when they're not.
Risk if Unfixed
If your door latch fails, it could open unexpectedly while you're driving or even while the car is stopped. This could lead to an occupant being thrown out of the vehicle or causing injury in a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the door latch system to make sure your doors stay shut properly – and it's completely free. You'll get a notice when it's time to schedule the repair.
