What Happened
The shift-by-wire system in your 7-Series is a computer-controlled gear shifter that helps you park your car. In some 2005-2008 models, this system can malfunction and shift the transmission to Neutral instead of Park if you press the Start/Stop button too quickly.
Risk if Unfixed
If you exit your vehicle with the transmission in Neutral and the parking brake off, your car could roll away. This is especially dangerous as it could crash or injure people trying to stop or enter your vehicle.
