ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Manufacturer
BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
What Happened
Your vehicle's engine has a computer system that helps it run smoothly. In some cases, a software glitch can cause the engine's two main banks to get out of sync, leading to engine stalls.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, you might not be able to restart the engine, and depending on where you are and how it stalls, you could be in a situation where you might crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will reprogram the engine computer to fix the software issue, and this service is free. You should contact the dealer or call 1-800-831-1117 to schedule the update.

Original — What Happened

IN THOSE CASES, THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE. DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF ENGINE ROUGHNESS, OR STALLING, AS WELL AS TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND THE DRIVER'S REACTIONS, THIS COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE DIGITAL ENGINE MANAGEMENT CONTROL UNIT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 8, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
