What Happened
The starter assembly in your vehicle is a crucial part that helps your car start. In some 2019-2021 BMW models, this assembly can overheat if it's overloaded, which can happen if you try to start your car multiple times when it's already malfunctioning.
Risk if Unfixed
If the starter assembly overheats, it could catch nearby engine compartment materials on fire, which could spread quickly and cause a serious fire in your vehicle.

Your BMW dealer will update your vehicle's software to prevent this issue, and it's completely free. You should schedule the update as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2019-2020 X5, X7, 2020 3 Series Sedan, X6, 2020-2021 7 Series Sedan, 2020 8 Series Convertible, 8 Series Coupe, and 2020 8 Series Gran Coupe vehicles. Please see the recall report for the complete list of models. In the event the starter motor fails, repeated attempts to start the vehicle can cause the starter motor to overheat from an electrical overload.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
The rearview camera in your vehicle is a crucial safety feature that shows you what's behind your car when you're reversing. In some affected 2019-2021 models, a small part of the camera's image may be missing or not light up when you shift into Reverse.
Risk if Unfixed
If you're relying on the rearview camera, a reduced or obscured image could make it harder to see what's behind your vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the camera software and update it if needed, free of charge. This repair is complimentary, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

When shifting into Reverse, a small portion of the rearview image may be obscured, or the screen may not illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

If the driver relies on only the rearview camera image, the missing or reduced rearview image view can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
