What Happened
The air bag in your 3 Series sedan is designed to protect you in case of a crash. However, some of the air bags in certain 2006-2011 models were made with a faulty inflator module that could explode when it's supposed to deploy.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes, sharp metal fragments could hurt you or someone else inside the vehicle, causing serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and replace the faulty air bag module with a safe one, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice, usually mailed on August 30, 2024.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Dealers will inspect and replace the driver's air bag module as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 30, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The wiring in your car's heating and air conditioning system helps control airflow - it's like the nervous system of your climate control. In some 2006-2011 BMW models, this wiring could get too hot and fail.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring overheats, it could melt the electrical connectors, which could cause a fire - even when you're not driving. This is a serious risk of a fire, even when your car is unattended.

Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty wiring and electrical connectors with new, safer ones - at no cost to you. They'll let you know when the repair is ready, and you should schedule it as soon as you can.
