What Happened
Your vehicle's seat belt warning system may not be working properly due to a software issue in the audio module. This means the warning chime that tells you to buckle up might not sound when it's supposed to.
Risk if Unfixed
If the warning chime doesn't sound, you might not be properly alerted to fasten your seat belt, which could increase your risk of injury in a crash.
Free Fix
Dealers will update the software for free, so you don't have to pay a thing. They'll send you a letter with instructions, and you can also contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to get started.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2022 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, 2022 430i Coupe, 2021-2022 430i, M440i Convertible, and 2020-2022 228i xDrive Gran Coupe vehicles. The receiver audio module control unit software may fail to properly generate audible seat belt warnings to the driver to fasten their seat belt. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

An audible chime that does not properly alert the driver to fasten their seat belt increases the risk of injury in a crash.

What Happened
Your vehicle's power window system, which includes the sunroof, may not work correctly. Specifically, the sunroof might close even when you're not trying to close it.
Risk if Unfixed
If the sunroof closes unexpectedly, it could cause injury, especially if you're inside the vehicle.
Free Fix
A free software update will be installed on your sunroof control system by a BMW dealership to fix the issue, and you'll be notified when the recall begins. You can also contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 228i, 228i xDrive, and M235i xDrive vehicles. If the driver initiates an automatic closure of the sunroof, and the vehicle key status is changed to "off" or "lock," the sunroof may continue to close. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, "Power-operated Window Systems."

If the sunroof continues to close after the vehicle is shut off, it may increase the risk of injury.
