What Happened
The knee bolster under your dashboard has a wire harness that powers your headlights. If your knees push against it in the right spot, the wire could get damaged and spark a short circuit.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring gets damaged, a fire could start in the left part of your dashboard. This could cause serious damage or even injure you.
Free Fix
Your Audi dealer will add a protective cover to the knee bolster, check the wiring harness, and replace it if needed. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, IF A DRIVER'S KNEES PUSH AGAINST THE KNEE BOLSTER (CRASH ELEMENT) LOCATED UNDER THE DASHBOARD, IT CAN CONTACT THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WIRING HARNESS, AND AN ELECTRICAL SHORT COULD OCCUR.

A FIRE COULD ORIGINATE IN THE LEFT DASHBOARD AREA.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVERING ON THE KNEE BOLSTER (CRASH ELEMENT). IN ADDITION, THE WIRING HARNESS AS WELL AS THE FELT PROTECTOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD CARRIER WILL BE CHECKED, AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 26, 2004.
