Component
STRUCTURE:BODY:TRUNK LID
Manufacturer
VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
What Happened
The electric trunk lid in your vehicle is controlled by a motor, clutch, and gas struts. In some cases, if one of the gas struts loses pressure, the lid could close quickly and unexpectedly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the trunk lid closes too fast, it could cause a serious injury to you or your passengers, especially if they're near the lid or reaching for something inside.
Free Fix
Your Audi dealer will update the software controlling the trunk lid to prevent this issue, and it's free of charge. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE AUTOMATIC REAR LID INCLUDES AN ELECTRIC MOTOR AND CLUTCH THAT WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH TWO GAS STRUTS TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE REAR LID, INCLUDING A MANUAL CLOSE FUNCTION. IF ONE OF THE STRUTS HAS A TOTAL LOSS OF PRESSURE, THE RESULTANT SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE REAR LID IS INTERPRETED BY THE SOFTWARE AS AN INTENDED MANUAL CLOSE AND THE MOTOR CLUTCH RELEASES TO CLOSE THE REAR LID IMMEDIATELY.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
THIS CAN RESULT IN AN UNINTENDED RAPID CLOSING OF THE REAR LID WITH A RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.
