What Happened
The powertrain control module is like the brain of your vehicle's transmission, controlling how the gears shift. In some cases, the software in this module can cause a brief lockup of your drive wheels if you shift gears at high speeds.
Risk if Unfixed
If the drive wheels lock up while you're driving over 40 mph, you could lose control of your vehicle, which could lead to a crash.
Free Fix
Your dealer will update the software in your powertrain control module to prevent this lockup, and the repair is completely free. You should schedule the update as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, THE SOFTWARE PROGRAMMED INTO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE CAN CAUSE A MOMENTARY LOCK UP OF THE DRIVE WHEELS IF THE VEHICLE IS TRAVELING OVER 40 MPH AND THE OPERATOR SHIFTS FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO DRIVE.
