What Happened
The ignition lock in your S 1000 RR motorcycle is a critical component that helps start the engine and control various systems. In some 2020-2026 models, the vibration of the bike can cause a small internal part to break, leading to a series of issues with your instrument display, rear lighting, and ABS.
Risk if Unfixed
If the ignition lock fails, your engine could stall while you're riding, or you might lose access to essential safety systems like your instrument display and ABS. This could make it difficult to control your motorcycle and increase the risk of a crash.

Your BMW dealer will fix the problem once a repair is developed. You'll receive a letter with more information, and you can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 for more details. The repair will be free, and you should schedule it as soon as you receive the letter.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 S 1000 RR US, and 2020-2026 S 1000 RR motorcycles. The vibration of the motorcycle may cause an internal component of the ignition lock to fail, which can cause the instrument display, rear lighting, and other systems such as ABS to fail, or cause an engine stall while riding.

The remedy is currently under development. Letters informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed September 14, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning September 14, 2026.
