What Happened
The transmission wiring harness in your M5 or M8 is a crucial group of wires that help your car shift gears smoothly. In some 2019-2020 models, these wires can get damaged and cause problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring is damaged, it could lead to a short circuit that causes your transmission to shift to neutral while you're driving. This would make it hard to control your speed, increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and repair or replace the transmission wiring harness, re-routing and securing it to prevent future damage. This repair is completely free, and you should schedule it as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 M5 and 2020 M8 Gran Coupe, M8 Coupe, and M8 Convertible vehicles. The transmission wiring harness can become damaged, resulting in an electrical short circuit.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An electrical short circuit can cause the transmission to shift to neutral resulting in a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash.
Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace any damaged transmission harnesses. All harnesses will be rerouted and secured. These repairs will be performed, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 3, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
