What Happened
The transmission wiring harness in your vehicle is the bundle of electrical wires that sends signals to your transmission. In some 2019-2020 M5 and M8 models, these wires can get damaged, causing a short circuit.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring harness gets damaged, the transmission could suddenly shift to neutral while you're driving, which means you'll lose power and control. This could increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will fix the issue for free by replacing any damaged wiring harnesses and re-routing them to prevent future problems. You'll get a notification when it's time to schedule the repair.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 M5 and 2020 M8 Gran Coupe, M8 Coupe, and M8 Convertible vehicles. The transmission wiring harness can become damaged, resulting in an electrical short circuit.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An electrical short circuit can cause the transmission to shift to neutral resulting in a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash.
Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace any damaged transmission harnesses. All harnesses will be rerouted and secured. These repairs will be performed, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 3, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
The rearview camera in your vehicle provides an essential view of what's behind you. In certain 2020-2021 models, a small portion of the image may be cut off, making it harder to see what's behind your car.
Risk if Unfixed
If you rely only on the rearview camera and can't see the full view, you're more likely to miss something behind your vehicle, which could lead to a crash or injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the camera software to ensure you have a full and clear view behind your vehicle, and this service is completely free.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 X3 sDrive 30i, X3 xDrive 30i, X3M 40i, X3 xDrive 30e, X4 xDrive 30i, X4M 40i, 530i, 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, M5, 550e, 550e xDrive, and 550e iPerformance vehicles. A small portion of the rearview image may be slightly obscured. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

If the driver relies on only the rearview camera image, the reduced rearview image view can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
The back-up camera system in your vehicle is designed to show you what's behind your car when you're reversing. However, in some models, the camera settings can be adjusted to hide the image, and it might remember that setting next time you put your car in reverse.
Risk if Unfixed
If the back-up camera image is missing, you might not see obstacles or pedestrians behind you, increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the back-up camera software to ensure the image always appears when you're in reverse mode – at no cost to you. You'll receive a notification when the repair is ready, and you should schedule it as soon as possible.

The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
