What Happened
The receiver audio module in your vehicle controls the sounds you hear when you start the engine and when you forget to buckle your seatbelt. In certain models, this system could fail to remind you to buckle up.
Risk if Unfixed
If the system fails, you won't hear the usual seatbelt reminder chime, which could lead to an increased risk of injury if you're involved in a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the software in your receiver audio module for free, so you should schedule a visit as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2022 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, 2022 430i Coupe, 2021-2022 430i, M440i Convertible, and 2020-2022 228i xDrive Gran Coupe vehicles. The receiver audio module control unit software may fail to properly generate audible seat belt warnings to the driver to fasten their seat belt. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

An audible chime that does not properly alert the driver to fasten their seat belt increases the risk of injury in a crash.

What Happened
The Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) in your seat belt is a safety feature that locks the belt in place when you leave your seat. In some of your affected vehicles, this part could fail early, before the belt is fully retracted.
Risk if Unfixed
If your seat belt retractor fails, it could lead to your seat belt not locking properly during a crash, which increases the risk of serious injury.
Free Fix
Your authorized BMW or MINI dealer will inspect and replace the faulty seat belt retractor, if necessary, at no cost to you, and you should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.

The head-thorax air bag in your 430i or M440i 4 Series Convertible helps protect you in side-impact crashes. In some cases, this air bag may not inflate correctly.

If the air bag doesn't deploy as it should in a side crash, you could be at higher risk of injury. This could lead to more severe harm than if the air bag had worked properly.

The 48-Volt battery in your vehicle is a special backup power source that helps the car start and provides extra power for certain features. In some 2021 BMW models, the connection to the starter-generator might not have been assembled correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the connection isn't fixed, it could cause a fire in your vehicle. This is a serious risk that could happen while you're driving or parked.

What Happened
The rearview camera system in your vehicle shows you what's behind your car when you shift into Reverse. However, in certain models, a small part of the image might be missing or not turn on.
Risk if Unfixed
If you rely on the rearview camera and can't see the whole image, you might not notice a person, pet, or object behind your car, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will check and update the rearview camera software if necessary, at no cost to you. This will ensure you get a complete and clear view behind your car, and you should schedule the update as soon as you receive the recall notice.
