What Happened
The drive chain in your motorcycle is like an important conveyor belt that connects your engine to the rear wheel. It's possible that the drive chain in certain 2008 and 2009 F650 GS and F 800 GS motorcycles wasn't made according to the proper standards.
Risk if Unfixed
If the drive chain breaks, it could get trapped between the rear wheel and the frame, locking up the wheel and potentially causing a crash.
Free Fix
Your dealer will replace the faulty drive chain and sprockets for free – no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 AND 2009 F650 GS AND F 800 GS MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 27, 2007 THROUGH MARCH 30, 2009. THE DRIVE CHAINS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PRODUCED TO SPECIFICATION. AS A RESULT, OVER TIME THE DRIVE CHAIN COULD BREAK.

IF THE BROKEN CHAIN BECOMES TRAPPED BETWEEN THE REAR WHEEL AND THE FRAME, THE REAR WHEEL COULD LOCK UP, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.

BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE DRIVE CHAIN AND SPROCKETS ON THE AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 30, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The charcoal canister in your motorcycle is a device that cleans the air your engine breathes. It's connected to a hose that brings in fresh air, but if water gets in, it can cause problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If water gets into the charcoal canister, your engine could stall unexpectedly, which could increase the risk of a crash on the road.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the hose and add a protective one to keep water out, at no cost to you. They'll route the hose correctly to prevent any issues, and you should schedule the repair when you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 THROUGH 2010 F650 GS AND F800 GS MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JANUARY 2008 AND DECEMBER 2009. DURING ENGINE OPERATION, A VACUUM IS CREATED IN ORDER TO DRAW FRESH AIR INTO THE CANISTER. THIS AIR THEN MIXES WITH THE FUEL VAPORS CAPTURED BY THE CANISTER, AND IS SUBSEQUENTLY COMBUSTED. DUE TO THE ROUTING OF THE VENTILATION HOSE, WATER NEAR THE END OF THE HOSE COULD BE DRAWN INTO THE CHARCOAL CANISTER.

WATER COULD FLOW INTO THE CANISTER CAUSING A STALLING CONDITION INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

What Happened
The chain sprocket fasteners in your F650 GS or F800 GS motorcycle are the bolts that hold the chain sprocket in place. In some cases, these fasteners might not be tightened correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the fasteners come loose, the sprocket could fall off while you're riding, making it harder to control your bike and increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your authorized BMW dealer will inspect and tighten the chain sprocket fasteners, replacing any damaged ones. This service is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.
