ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Manufacturer
BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
What Happened
The Valvetronic system in your engine, which helps control how your engine runs, has a software glitch that could cause engine bank I and II to get out of sync.

If this happens, your engine could stall, and you might not be able to restart it. If the engine is running rough or stalls in heavy traffic, you could lose control of the vehicle and crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the digital control unit in your engine to fix the software glitch – free of charge. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible after receiving the recall notice.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY

Manufacturer
BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
What Happened
The electric fuel pump in your vehicle is the part that supplies gasoline to your engine. In certain models, this pump might not be lubricated properly, which could cause wear and tear over time.
Risk if Unfixed
If this wear and tear happens, your engine could stall when the fuel tank is almost empty, even if the gauge says you have enough fuel. You might be unable to restart the engine until you add more gas.
Free Fix
Your authorized dealer will update the fuel pump control system to prevent this issue, and the repair is free. You should schedule the service soon, and if you have any issues, you can contact BMW at 1-800-332-4269.
Show original NHTSA language
Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP RUNS AT A ROTATIONAL SPEED THAT COULD RESULT IN REDUCED LUBRICATION OF ITS INTERNAL COMPONENTS. OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, WEAR-INDUCED INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE FUEL PUMP COULD RESULT IN INSUFFICIENT FUEL SUPPLY TO THE ENGINE WHEN THE FUEL TANK CONTAINS ONE-THIRD OR LESS OF ITS MAXIMUM FUEL CAPACITY.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, THE ENGINE COULD STALL AND NOT BE RESTARTED UNTIL MORE FUEL WAS ADDED TO THE FUEL TANK. THIS COULD OCCUR EVEN THOUGH THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATED THAT FUEL STILL REMAINED IN THE TANK.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL SYSTEM. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-332-4269.
