Critical #21V907000 Plain English
Component

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The EGR cooler is a part that helps clean up exhaust gases in your diesel engine. In your 2013-2018 BMW, the EGR cooler might start leaking, causing a serious problem.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler leaks, it could cause a fire by creating smoldering particles that melt the intake manifold. This is a serious risk that could lead to a blaze in your engine compartment.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty EGR cooler and check the intake manifold for damage. If it's damaged, they'll fix or replace it for you, all at no cost. You should schedule this repair as soon as you get the recall notice, and it's expected to be available starting June 2022.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The EGR valve in your vehicle is a crucial part that helps reduce emissions. It's designed to prevent pollution by recirculating exhaust gases, but in some models, a leak in the EGR cooler can cause problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler leaks, coolants can mix with soot and smolder in your engine. This can cause the intake manifold to melt, which increases the risk of a fire while you're driving.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the EGR cooler, replace it if necessary, and also replace the intake manifold if it's already been damaged. This repair is completely free. You'll be notified when it's time to schedule the work, and you should follow the instructions to get it done.
