What Happened
Your vehicle's traction battery is like a high-tech heart that powers your electric motor. In some 2020-2021 models, tiny debris might have gotten into the battery cells during manufacturing.
Risk if Unfixed
If the debris causes a short-circuit, your battery could catch fire or injure you. This is a serious safety risk that requires immediate attention.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the battery and replace it if necessary, at no cost to you. For now, avoid charging your car, driving in manual or sport mode, and using the shift paddles until the repair is done.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 530e, 530e xDrive, 530e iPerformance and X3 xDrive30e and MINI Cooper Countryman All4 SE, 2020 BMW i8, and 2021 330e, 330e xDrive, 745Le xDrive and X5 xDrive45e vehicles. Debris may have entered one or more of the hybrid battery cells during their production.

The debris could result in a short-circuit, increasing the risk of fire or injury.
Original — Remedy
BMW will inspect and, if necessary, replace the battery module free of charge. The remedy is currently being developed. Until the remedy is completed, drivers are instructed to not charge their vehicles. Drivers are instructed to not drive in manual mode, sport mode, and to not use the shift paddles. Owners were notified of the safety risk October 23, 2020. The recall began November 24, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
The rearview camera in your vehicle is a crucial safety feature that helps you see what's behind you. In certain models, a small part of the camera's image may be missing or not light up when you shift into Reverse.
Risk if Unfixed
If you rely on the rearview camera to check what's behind you, a missing or dark image could increase the risk of a crash or injury, especially in tight spaces or when reversing.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the rearview camera software to ensure you have a clear view of what's behind you, free of charge. You'll get a notification with instructions on how to schedule the update.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

What Happened
The back-up camera in your vehicle is a critical safety feature that shows you what's behind your car while reversing. But in certain models, the settings can be adjusted in a way that makes the image disappear, even after you restart the car.
Risk if Unfixed
If the back-up camera display is blank, you might not see obstacles or pedestrians behind you while reversing, increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the back-up camera software to fix the issue, and this service is completely free. You should schedule the update as soon as you get the recall notice.
