AIR BAGS Safety Recalls

Component

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The airbag on your side or window is designed to protect you in a crash. However, in some 2014-2015 BMW models, the airbag's inflator could fail at the weld joint, causing gas to leak or the inflator to rupture.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator ruptures, sharp metal fragments could fly into the vehicle, potentially causing serious injuries. If the inflator leaks, the airbag might not inflate properly during a crash, also increasing the risk of injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible after receiving the recall notice, and you can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2015 2 Series Coupe (228i, 228i xDrive, M235i), 3 Series Sedan (320i, 320i xDrive, 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335i xDrive, M3, 328d, 328d xDrive), 4 Series Coupe (428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, M4), and 2015 4 Series Gran Coupe (428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive) vehicles. The head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint, which can cause gas to leak from the inflator or result in an inflator rupture.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An inflator that ruptures may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will replace the head air bags, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 4, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

AIR BAGS

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The air bag control module in your vehicle is responsible for deploying the driver's front air bag in a crash. In some 2015 BMW 428i and 435i Convertible models, this module was programmed incorrectly, which could affect how the air bag works.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag deploys too late or not at all, you could be more likely to get hurt in a crash, putting you and others at risk of serious injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the air bag control module with the correct software, which is free. You'll get a notification with instructions on how to schedule the repair.
