What Happened
The EGR cooler in your diesel engine is a small part that helps reduce emissions. It's integrated into the exhaust system, and in some 2018 328D models, it can leak internally, causing problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler leaks, soot and coolant mix together, creating smoldering particles that could cause your intake manifold to melt. This could lead to a fire, which is extremely hazardous.

How to Get This Fixed

Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty EGR cooler, inspect and possibly replace the intake manifold, and clean the connecting EGR pipe - all free of charge. You'll get a notice in the mail on December 5, 2025, and you should schedule the repair as soon as possible.
