ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD

Manufacturer
MITSUBISHI AMERICA
What Happened
The electrical wiring harness in your vehicle is the network of cables that connects your engine controls. In some cases, this harness may not have enough space near the exhaust heat shield, which could cause the insulation to melt.
Risk if Unfixed
If the insulation melts, your engine's crank angle sensor wiring could short circuit, causing your engine to stall or run erratically while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your authorized Mitsubishi dealer will inspect the harness for damage, and if it's okay, they'll tie it back to prevent future problems. If there's damage, they'll repair it and tie it back to keep it safe. This service is free, and you'll get a notification letter on May 13, 2002.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE MAIN UNDER HOOD ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS MAY HAVE INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE ENGINE CONTROL HARNESS AND THE EXHAUST HEAT SHIELD. AS A RESULT, THE HARNESS COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE HEAT SHIELD, WHICH COULD RESULT IN MELTING OF THE HARNESS INSULATION.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
THE MELTING OF THE HARNESS INSULATION COULD RESULT IN GROUNDING OF THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR WIRING, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO RUN ERRATICALLY OR STOP SUDDENLY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE HARNESS FOR DAMAGE AND, IF NONE IS EVIDENT, WILL TIE THE HARNESS BACK TO PREVENT THE HARNESS FROM EVER COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE HEAT SHIELD. ANY HARNESS THAT SHOWS EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE WILL BE REPAIRED AS NECESSARY AND THEN TIED BACK TO PREVENT FUTURE DAMAGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 13, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Manufacturer
MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN
What Happened
Your dashboard and sun visor have bilingual warning labels to remind you to wear your seatbelt and to use airbags. However, these labels are too small and don't meet federal safety standards.
Risk if Unfixed
If the labels don't meet safety standards, that doesn't mean your airbags won't work. However, it's essential to make sure you understand how to use them properly, and these labels are supposed to help with that.
Free Fix
You'll receive a letter with a new label design and a picture, and you'll also get replacement labels for your sun visors in the mail. This is free, and you should contact Mitsubishi Caribbean at 1-787-251-8715 to confirm your information and schedule the update.

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:OWNERS/SERVICE/OTHER MANUAL

Manufacturer
MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
What Happened
The owner's manual for your vehicle is missing some important instructions on how to properly install a child restraint system (like a car seat). The manual doesn't show you how to adjust the headrest for a safe installation.
Risk if Unfixed
If the car seat is not installed correctly, it won't be able to keep your child safe in a crash. This could lead to serious injury to your child.
Free Fix
You'll receive a letter with a sticker that shows the correct instructions for installing the car seat. The sticker will also be added to your owner's manual, and it's free. You should contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820 to confirm the recall and get the correct instructions.
Show original NHTSA language

Original — Risk if Unfixed
IF THE TETHER STRAP IS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED TO THE TETHER ANCHOR, THE CHILD SAFETY SEAT MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT RESTRAINED. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE CHILD COULD BE INJURED.
Original — Remedy
