Component

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Manufacturer
BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC
What Happened
The fuel tank breather hose on your BMW F800 S or F800 ST motorcycle is a critical part that helps to balance the air pressure inside the fuel tank. In some 2007-2008 models, this hose is routed in a way that can cause the tank to deform at high temperatures.
Risk if Unfixed
If the fuel tank deforms, it could rub against the rear wheel, especially if you're carrying a lot of weight. This could lead to a leak in the tank, which would be extremely dangerous if it were to happen near a heat source.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will reposition the fuel tank breather hose to ensure proper pressure balance. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

Original — What Happened
BMW IS RECALLING 1,980 MY 2007-2008 F800 S AND F800 ST MOTORCYCLES. DUE TO THE ROUTING OF THE FUEL TANK BREATHER HOSE, PRESSURE EQUALIZATION INSIDE THE FUEL TANK IS POSSIBLE ONLY TO A LIMITED EXTENT. CONSEQUENTLY, AT HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE FUEL TANK CAN DEFORM. IF THIS HAPPENED AT THE POINT WHERE THE FUEL TANK IS SHAPED TO PROVIDE CLEARANCE FOR THE REAR WHEEL, THEN, IN COMBINATION WITH A LARGE PAYLOAD, THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK COULD RUB AGAINST THE REAR WHEEL.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
IF THIS OCCURRED, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A LEAK COULD DEVELOP IN THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL REROUTE THE FUEL TANK BREATHER HOSE. THE RECALL BEGAN DURING AUGUST 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-331-1117.

What Happened
The rear wheel drive bearing and axle on your motorcycle are the parts that help you steer and balance on the road. In some 2007-2009 F 800 S and F 800 ST models, these parts may wear out too quickly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the bearing and axle wear out, it could make your motorcycle harder to control, increasing the risk of a crash while you're riding.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the wheel bearing and replace it, along with the rear axle if needed, at no cost to you. Just schedule the repair when you get the recall notice.
