What Happened
The engine management system in your vehicle is a computer that helps control how your engine runs. In some 2020-2021 models, this system might not provide full braking assist when you start the engine.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, you might lose automatic braking support while driving, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the engine management software to fix this issue, and the repair is completely free. You should schedule the update as soon as you get your recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 M340i, M340i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, X3 M40i, 2020-2021 X4 M40i, 745Le xDrive, 2019-2021 Z4 M40i, and 2020-2021 Toyota Supra vehicles. During engine start, the engine management software may cause loss of braking assist. Full mechanical braking (without assist) remains available.

Loss of braking assist can increase the risk of a crash.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
Your vehicle's rearview camera helps you see what's behind you when you're in Reverse. In some 2019-2021 BMW models, a small part of the image on the screen might be blocked or not light up when you're shifting into Reverse.
Risk if Unfixed
If you rely solely on the rearview camera, a partially blocked view could increase the risk of a crash or injury while reversing.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will check and update the camera software if needed, at no cost to you. This software update is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

When shifting into Reverse, a small portion of the rearview image may be obscured, or the screen may not illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

The back-up camera system in your vehicle helps you see what's behind you when you're reversing. However, in some cases, the camera settings can get stuck on a screen that hides the image.
Risk if Unfixed
If the camera image is blocked, you might not be able to see what's behind your vehicle while reversing. This increases the risk of a crash when you're backing up.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the camera software to fix the issue, and the repair is completely free. You'll receive a notification with instructions on how to schedule the update.

The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse.
