What Happened
The strut mount is a critical part of your vehicle's suspension system, helping to connect the front wheel to the rest of the car. In some cases, this part wasn't installed correctly, which could cause it to come loose while driving.
Risk if Unfixed
If the strut mount fails, it could affect your vehicle's handling and control, making it harder to steer and increasing the risk of a crash, especially if you're driving on a straight road or making sharp turns.
Free Fix
Your authorized BMW dealer will replace both front strut mounts with new ones, free of charge. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible and contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117 if you don't get the repair done within a reasonable time.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DURING THE STRUT MOUNT MANUFACTURING PROCESS, THE THRUST BEARING WAS NOT PROPERLY POSITIONS AND SECURED. IF THE SUSPENSION IS FULLY UNLOADED, THE FRONT STRUT COULD SEPARATE FROM THE UPPER MOUNT.

DEALERS WILL REPLACE BOTH FRONT SPRING STRUT UPPER MOUNTS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
