What Happened
The Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) in your seat belt is the part that makes sure the seat belt tightens when you're not wearing it. In certain models, this part can malfunction and deactivate too early, before the belt is fully tucked in.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens in a crash, the seat belt won't be able to keep you securely in place, which could lead to a more serious injury.
Free Fix
Your authorized BMW or MINI dealer will inspect and replace the seat belt retractor (including the seat belt) if needed, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice.

The passenger seat belt Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) may deactivate early, before the webbing fully retracts. As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

During a crash, a seat belt retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of injury.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417; 1-866-825-1525 (MINI); 1-877-877-3735 (Rolls Royce); and 1-888-270-9371 (Toyota).

What Happened
The part that holds your seat belt in place is called the buckle assembly. In some 2021 BMW 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, M3, and 330e xDrive models, this part wasn't tightened correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the seat belt isn't secure, it might not work properly in a crash, which could lead to serious injury.
Free Fix
Your local BMW dealer will check the seat belt buckle assembly and replace it if necessary, completely free of charge. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice.

An improperly installed seat belt assembly may not restrain an occupant as expected, increasing the risk of injury.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front seat belt buckle assembly connection and, if necessary, replace it, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 25, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The traction battery in your vehicle powers the electric motor. In some 2020-2021 models, tiny debris might have gotten into the battery cells during production.
Risk if Unfixed
If the debris causes a short-circuit, it could lead to a fire or an injury. This is a serious risk, and you should take steps to minimize it.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and replace the battery module, free of charge, once the remedy is available. In the meantime, avoid charging your vehicle, driving in manual or sport mode, and using the shift paddles.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 530e, 530e xDrive, 530e iPerformance and X3 xDrive30e and MINI Cooper Countryman All4 SE, 2020 BMW i8, and 2021 330e, 330e xDrive, 745Le xDrive and X5 xDrive45e vehicles. Debris may have entered one or more of the hybrid battery cells during their production.

The debris could result in a short-circuit, increasing the risk of fire or injury.

BMW will inspect and, if necessary, replace the battery module free of charge. The remedy is currently being developed. Until the remedy is completed, drivers are instructed to not charge their vehicles. Drivers are instructed to not drive in manual mode, sport mode, and to not use the shift paddles. Owners were notified of the safety risk October 23, 2020. The recall began November 24, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY

What Happened
The 12V battery in your hybrid vehicle helps start the engine and powers accessories. In some 2020-2021 models, the welding on the battery cells might not be secure, creating a path for electricity to leak and cause a short-circuit.
Risk if Unfixed
If the battery short-circuits, it could catch fire, which could harm you or others nearby, and also damage your vehicle.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the battery and replace it if needed, at no cost to you. They'll take care of this fix for you, and you can contact them at 1-800-525-7417 if you have any questions.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
The rearview camera is a critical safety feature that shows you what's behind your car when you're in reverse. In some 2019-2021 BMW models, a small part of the camera image might not show up or the screen might not light up when you shift into reverse, affecting your ability to see the area behind your vehicle.
Risk if Unfixed
If you rely only on the rearview camera and can't see the area behind your vehicle, you could accidentally back into something or someone, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will check the rearview camera software and update it if needed, at no cost to you. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.
